I am a licensed marriage and family therapist in Washington State, where I live with my wife and daughters. I am the behavioral health director and an executive team member at Columbia Valley Community Health and governing board chair for the North Central Accountable Community of Health. I take on occasional consulting and writing gigs.
Prior to joining CVCH, I served in diverse roles including as therapist for the Department of Defense in Fort Worth, Texas, and as a clinical administrator in Dallas, Texas. I earned a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from Seattle Pacific University in 2004 after earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology from East Texas Baptist University in 1999. I have worked in churches, schools, a university counseling center, teen shelters, juvenile detention centers, outpatient clinics, private practice, and a military installation.
I became a PREPARE/ENRICH provider in 2003 and a Marriage Education Services provider for the Texas Healthy Marriage and Relationship Initiative in 2010. Also in 2010, I joined GoodTherapy.org as an Expert Contributor and in 2011 also became a Contributing Editor. In 2011 and 2015, I served as an Abstract Reviewer for AAMFT annual conferences.
My writing has been published in Management Group Medical Association’s magazine MGMA Connection, the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy’s Family Therapy Magazine, the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy’s magazine Therapy Today,, the Association for Family Therapy and Systemic Practice’s magazine Context , the Association for Humanistic Psychology’s journal Self & Society, the Society for Existential Analysis’s magazine Hermeneutic Circular, the Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy’s Irish Journal of Counselling and Psychotherapy, the Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy’s journal Inside Out, and the Wenatchee World. I also write for PsychologyToday.com, GoodTherapy.org, and other sites.
My poetry has been published by the American Academy of Psychotherapists in Voices Journal, the Irish Association for Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy in Inside Out: the Irish Journal for Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy, the Society for Existential Analysis in Hermeneutic Circular, and the Association for Humanistic Psychology in Great Britain’s Self & Society: An International Journal for Humanistic Psychology.
I authored a chapter, “The Empathor’s New Clothes: When Person-Centered Practices and Evidence-Based Claims Collide,” in the book Re-visioning Person-Centred Therapy (2018, Routledge / Taylor & Francis Group), contributed to a chapter in the book A Practice Beyond Cultural Humility: How Clinicians Can Work More Effectively in a Diverse World (2020, Routledge / Taylor & Francis Group), and authored the Children’s Behavioral Health Integration and Value Transformation Toolkit (2018, Washington Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics / Pediatric Transforming Clinical Practices Initiative).
