As a person leaves home physically they also must navigate what it means to leave home emotionally. Achieving independence and new social connection is difficult, and isolation and loneliness are common. There can be tremendous anxiety in this time of transition.
Invisible loyalties and pain may linger from the past. Relationships with family, friends, dates, and coworkers all have a stake in how we respond to our hidden emotional life.
Moodiness, reactive behavior, and lack of direction may result from depression or anxiety. Confidence, focus, appetite, and sleep may suffer, resulting in an ambiguous dissatisfaction.
Whatever the case, young adulthood is a season of transition. Many young adults today value participating in therapy nearly as a rite of passage, a way of reflecting more deeply on who they are, where they’ve been, and where they’re heading.
I work with young adults to re-establish bearings, re-conceptualize personal strengths and direction, and facilitate a renewal of vision and identity.
